Hello Fashionistas/os! My name is Liad Stearns and this is my first semester writing for CollegeFashionista. I am a sophomore at Tulane University and am pursuing a degree in Chemistry and Public Health. I’m so excited to see what fashionistas I will spy on campus and what the upcoming fall will bring!

While I have been involved with fashion for quite some time, my interest peaked a few years ago when my Grandma brought her sewing machine to my house to show me stitching basics. I began by sewing something as simple as a pillowcase, then started playing around with varying fabrics which led to making a handful of ill-fitting skater skirts and tank tops. Although people say, “practice makes perfect,” my many hours of practice has not created perfection. However, it has allowed me to stitch up a color blocked trench coat, patterned vest and a few loose, layered tops perfect for class in the intense New Orleans heat.

For as long as I can remember, I have spent hours in my room putting together just the right outfit for the upcoming day. Although I grew up in a small town in northern Connecticut where the newest fashions occasionally failed to reach, I often found myself overdressed and my style seemingly out of place. When I was finally able to get up and pick any place to attend school, I knew I wanted a city with more diversity and fashion inspiration, and New Orleans was just the place.

Like many things, I tend to pull my style from my surroundings. From the rural Northeast to eclectic New Orleans I have developed a variety of personalities within my closet. Two of my favorite looks include the extremes of loose, bohemian dresses (my everyday wear), and all black jumpsuits with a leather jacket and heeled, buckled booties. Regardless of the occasion, I am almost always wearing something extremely loose and comfortable, neutral or black in color and sandals or booties with just a little added height.

I can’t wait to share fashionable looks from on campus with you all. Check back for my articles at the beginning of each month!
